Federación de Taxistas pide donación de 30 mil vacunas preventivas contra COVID – 19 al laboratorio Pfizer
NUEVA YORK._ La Federación de Taxistas del Estado de Nueva York, que agrupa a más de 150 mil taxistas de los cuales 30 mil de mayoría dominicana, son miembros de la organización, pidió al laboratorio Pfizer la donación de 30 mil vacunas preventivas contra COVID-19 y advirtieron que si la corporación no responde, se movilizarán frente al edificio corporativo en Manhattan.
En una conferencia de prensa ayer miércoles frente a las instalaciones de Pfizer situadas en el edificio 235 Este de ,la calle 42 en Manhattan, el activista Fernando Mateo, portavoz de la federación, dijo que la industria del taxi livery (sin medallón) en Nueva York es la quinta fuerza de trabajo y que numerosos choferes perdieron sus vidas en el pico de la pandemia sirviendo a las comunidades en las que trabajan, como trabajadores esenciales.
“Nosotros estamos aquí pidiéndole a la compañía Pfizer que regale 30 mil vacunas a los primeros choferes quieran ser vacunados”, dijo Mateo, acompañado por el presidente de la federación y dueño de la base de taxis High Class en El Bronx, Antonio Cabrera (Tuly).
Mateo señaló que los choferes livery laboran en una de las industrias de más alto riesgo de contagios como es la del taxi.
La federación dice que un 20% de los taxistas en Nueva York se han contagiado con la pandemia.
Mateo dijo que los taxistas activos en labores son unos 150 mil y la federación cuenta con la quinta parte de esa cantidad.
“Hay 30 mil choferes que nosotros, la Federación de Taxistas representamos y trabajan en lugares con mayor peligro e infecciones ha habido”, explicó el activista.
El concejal dominicano Ydanis Rodríguez del distrito 10 en el Alto Manhattan y presidente del Comité de Transporte en el ayuntamiento de Nueva York, dijo que los taxistas juegan un papel importante con su trabajo en medio del coronavirus.
“Creemos que la ciudad debería tener a los taxistas como uno de los primeros grupos que debería recibir la vacuna”, pidió Rodríguez.
Mateo dijo que la federación no se ha podido contactar con los ejecutivos de Pfizer, pero espera que cuando la empresa oiga el pedido de los taxistas, y vean lo razonable que son los taxistas, va a poder asignar las 30 mil vacunas para los choferes.
Dijo que si Pfizer no obtempera la petición, la federación convocará a una movilización
frente al edificio que aloja las oficinas de la farmacéutica.
El taxista dominicano Humberto Taveras, quien estuvo en la conferencia de prensa dijo que los choferes trabajan con mucha gente enferma.
“En días pasados tuve que llevar a una niña de 8 años y que tenía el coronavirus y a otra de la misma edad que también tenía el virus”, relató Taveras.
