Estupidización acelerada

Señores, la estupidización “va en coche”. Aunque, en honor a la verdad, creo que cuenta con medios mucho más veloces.
Me explico: lo que antes implicaba espera, que muchas veces parecía eterna, ahora suele ser asunto de “un clic”. De entrada, todo parece color de rosa. ¡Se acabó el esperar! Y eso, cuando se toma a la ligera, parece bueno y hasta genera una extraordinaria sensación de poder.
Pero, ¿es realmente positivo que todo ocurra “a la velocidad del rayo”? ¿Cómo influye la rapidez en las interacciones humanas? ¿Cuáles son las consecuencias de conseguir objetivos “más rápido que a la carrera”?
Al tema se refiere Daniel Kahneman, en su libro Pensar rápido, pensar despacio. El científico reseña que el pensamiento rápido resulta eficiente para situaciones donde la solución es conocida y hasta familiar, mientras que el pensamiento lento es necesario para problemas difíciles o que requieren un análisis cuidadoso, como resolver una operación compleja o tomar una decisión de negocios.
Estupidización por sus fueros
De manera generalizada asociamos la estupidez con la lentitud para pensar y entender. De hecho, la RAE la define como “torpeza notable en comprender las cosas”. Pero algunos estudiosos plantean que se trata de algo mucho más profundo y dañino.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, pastor y pensador alemán, dice que “la estupidez es más peligrosa que la maldad”. Explica que el mal se ve y se puede combatir, pero la estupidez es como un muro: no escucha razones ni acepta hechos, y puede ser usada por personas malintencionadas para engañar o controlar a otras. Así, un grupo de gente que no piensa por sí misma puede permitir que sucedan cosas malas sin darse cuenta.
La tecnología, sobre todo cuando se usa sin criterios claros, se convierte en generadora de estupidez. Una muestra de ello es un fenómeno con nombre en inglés: el phubbing. Es algo muy común. Consiste en poner más atención al teléfono celular que a la persona con la que se “interactúa”. El término está compuesto por las palabras inglesas “phone” y “snubbing” (teléfono y desaire, en español).
Estudios recientes han demostrado que el phubbing provoca que las personas se sientan tristes, excluidas y desconfiadas. Algunos tratadistas han encontrado que, si alguien interrumpe la conversación tres veces por estar pendiente al teléfono, la otra persona experimenta una emoción negativa y termina perdiendo la confianza.
Y todavía más: explican que el phubbing no solo afecta a quien es ignorado, sino que también causa malestar en quien lo practica. Sostienen que el hecho de no hablar cara a cara puede ser una forma de “estupidez”. Explican que, en esos casos, por no prestar atención, no usamos la razón para entender a la otra persona.
Esta situación genera serias dificultades en las relaciones humanas. Provocar o permitir que el teléfono interfiera puede llegar a ser motivo de conflictos y sentimientos heridos entre amigos, familiares, en el trabajo y hasta entre parejas. A esto se suma la reducción en la confianza ante quien parece dar más importancia a su celular que a la relación. Y, como si faltara más, el daño se completa con la soledad y desconexión, que se disfrazan de “compañía virtual”, y terminan reduciendo el rendimiento por déficit de concentración.
Por fortuna hay ejercicios sencillos que solo requieren disposición y terminan ayudando a que nos mantengamos humanos, felices y productivos. Hay muy buenos resultados con prácticas como compartir sin celulares o tener momentos de juego sin pantallas. Esto ayuda a escuchar y conversar cara a cara.
Algunos expertos recomiendan silenciar notificaciones y apagar celulares durante las comidas, en clase o en otras actividades que requieran concentración. Otra ayuda clave consiste en leer textos largos, pensar y hacerse preguntas al respecto. ¿Cómo me siento con esto? Esa pregunta es de gran valor para escoger lo que aporta y desechar lo que daña.
Existen valiosos juegos de concentración que ayudan a prestar más atención. Pero también hablar con respeto y honestidad sirve para apoyar a relacionados que van en camino a dejarse arrastrar por la corriente.
Como se puede apreciar, con prácticas sencillas nos encaminamos a analizar lo que nos llega y a no asumir todo sin pensar. Pero lo más importante: así logramos escaparnos de la estupidización acelerada.
