ENAV: Cuna del Arte Visual en República Dominicana con más de 80 años de historia
La Escuela Nacional de Artes Visuales reafirma su liderazgo como semillero de las artes plásticas en el país
Santo Domingo, RD. – Con más de 80 años de trayectoria, la Escuela Nacional de Artes Visuales (ENAV) continúa siendo el pilar fundamental en la formación artística de la República Dominicana. Lejos de perder vigencia, se mantiene más activa que nunca, impactando vidas a través del arte y consolidándose como la institución más influyente en el desarrollo de las artes plásticas del país.
Fundada el 19 de agosto de 1942 bajo el nombre de Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, en pleno corazón de la Zona Colonial, su creación fue impulsada por la Dirección General de Bellas Artes -organismo establecido en 1940 mediante la Ley 311-40– con el objetivo de promover la cultura y las expresiones artísticas. Esta dependencia, hoy parte del Ministerio de Cultura, sentó las bases de la enseñanza artística en la nación.
Desde sus primeros años, la escuela recibió el aporte de destacados artistas europeos exiliados del régimen franquista, entre ellos el escultor español Manolo Pascual, su primer director. Figuras como José Vela Zanetti, Eugenio Fernández Granel y Antonio Prats Ventós formaron parte del cuerpo docente fundador, al que se unió la dominicana Celeste Woss y Gil, quien imprimió su sensibilidad artística en la formación de generaciones enteras.
Desde sus inicios, la matrícula fue mayoritariamente femenina, dando a muchas mujeres una vía profesional en el mundo artístico. Entre los primeros egresados que luego se integraron como docentes destacan nombres como Marianela Jiménez y Domingo Liz.
Un plan académico en evolución constante
El programa académico comenzó con asignaturas esenciales como dibujo, pintura y escultura. A lo largo de los años, el currículo se ha enriquecido y actualizado, culminando en el plan de estudios vigente desde 2024.
El proceso de ingreso inicia con un curso preparatorio de cuatro meses. Los estudiantes que demuestran aptitudes acceden a la carrera de cuatro años, al término de la cual reciben un Diploma de Estudios de Nivel Medio en Artes Visuales, con menciones en Pintura, Escultura, Dibujo Publicitario o Cerámica.
Entre las asignaturas impartidas figuran Dibujo, Pintura, Escultura, Grabado, Cerámica, Fotografía y Videoarte, además de Historia del Arte Universal y Dominicano, Diseño Gráfico, Perspectiva, Anatomía Artística y múltiples talleres creativos.
Infraestructura, vida estudiantil y proyectos emblemáticos
Ubicada en la calle El Conde 59, esquina Isabel La Católica, la ENAV dispone de talleres especializados, una sala de exposiciones, la biblioteca Frank Almánzar, un salón audiovisual y áreas de almacenaje. Sus muros decorados con obras estudiantiles convierten el recinto en una galería viva en constante transformación.
La institución complementa su programa académico con charlas, talleres, conferencias y exposiciones. Entre sus proyectos más emblemáticos destacan: Jornada de Arte y Género, Más allá de la isla (dedicado a egresados en el extranjero), Tras las huellas (centrado en egresados que residen en el país), así como Egresados y Docentes de ENAV.
Cada mes de julio, la escuela presenta una exposición colectiva con los mejores trabajos del año, mientras que los egresados cuentan con el apoyo institucional para realizar una muestra individual, considerada su debut profesional ante el público.

- Tener al menos 14 años de edad
- Haber completado el octavo grado
- Llenar el formulario de inscripción
- Foto 2×2
- Certificado médico
- Cédula o acta de nacimiento
- Aprobar el curso preparatorio
Compromiso con el arte y la identidad cultural
Más allá de ser un centro educativo, la ENAV es un referente cultural dominicano. Por sus aulas han pasado artistas cuyas obras enriquecen el patrimonio del país y del mundo.
Iris Pérez, directora de la institución, subraya que la formación es completamente gratuita, y que los únicos gastos corresponden a los materiales utilizados por los estudiantes. “Aquí no vienen de vacaciones ni de paseo, vienen a formarse para ser artistas”, enfatizó.
Reafirma que “Crear es algo muy especial; el acto de crear primero nos transforma a nosotros mismos. Nos hace más cultos, más sensibles. El conocimiento que se adquiere aquí será multiplicado y devuelto al país, o al mundo, como patrimonio cultural”.
