Irlanda a punto de decidir sobre el matrimonio homosexual
DUBLÍN- La campaña del referéndum para legalizar en Irlanda el matrimonio homosexual entra hoy en su recta final con clara ventaja del “sí” en las encuestas, aunque el Gobierno alerta del avance del “no” entre el electorado de un país muy católico.
Poco más de tres millones de ciudadanos con derecho a voto están llamados el viernes 22 a las urnas para decidir si aceptan que un “matrimonio puede ser contraído de acuerdo con la ley por dos personas sin distinción de su sexo”.
Esa es la frase que el Gobierno de Dublín, de coalición entre conservadores y laboristas, ha propuesto añadir al artículo 41 de la Carta Magna para proteger constitucionalmente los derechos de la parejas del mismo sexo y equiparlos a los de los matrimonios convencionales.
En caso de que prospere la iniciativa, Irlanda se convertiría en el primer país del mundo que legaliza el matrimonio homosexual a través de una votación popular.
No obstante, como era de prever en un país donde la Iglesia católica aún tiene enorme poder -gestiona, por ejemplo, la mayoría de las escuelas públicas-, esta cuestión está levantado ampollas y el debate está siendo altamente emotivo.
Hasta la fecha, las encuestas han otorgado una cómoda vitoria al “sí”, pero el Gobierno ha mostrado su preocupación en los últimos días por la existencia del llamado “voto silencioso”, el de aquel que se decanta por el “no” pero lo oculta por temor a ser calificado de homófobo y, por tanto, no es detectado por los sondeos.
Un sondeo publicado hoy por el diario “The Irish Times” reveló que el voto positivo ha caído un 6 % desde marzo, hasta el 58 %, mientras el negativo ha avanzado dos puntos desde entonces, hasta el 25 %, aunque un 17 % del electorado, dos puntos más, se declara indeciso.
El primer ministro irlandés, el democristiano Enda Kenny, insistió hoy en que votar a favor del matrimonio homosexual es “hacerlo por la igualdad”, al tiempo que pidió a la ciudadanía que no “dé por hecha la victoria” y que acuda a las urnas.
Al Ejecutivo también le preocupa la baja participación, ya que, en ese contexto, cambios relativamente pequeños en la intención de voto pueden tener una influencia significativa sobre el resultado final.
En las dos últimas consultas populares, solo un 33 y un 39 % del electorado irlandés acudió a las urnas para pronunciarse en 2012 y 2013, respectivamente, sobre la reforma de la Ley del Menor y la abolición del Senado.
A pesar del temor a parecer intolerantes, los detractores del matrimonio gay podrían haber ganado terreno tras recurrir durante la campaña a los argumentos ya clásicos, si bien en esta ocasión también han mezclado moralidad y religión con teorías de dudosa validez científica.
La Conferencia Episcopal irlandesa ha advertido de que este tipo de uniones tratan de “redefinir la naturaleza del matrimonio”, lo cual “socavará” su papel como “cimiento fundamental de nuestra sociedad”.
“La iglesia quiere recalcar que el matrimonio se reserva única y complementariamente para las relaciones entre una mujer y un hombre, a partir de las cuales solo es posible engendrar y criar hijos”, subrayaron los obispos en una carta pastoral.
Uno de los grupos más visible, “Madres y Padres Importan” (MFM), apoya la posición de la Iglesia y advierte de que la reforma constitucional sobre este asunto atenta contra los valores de la familia tradicional porque les abre las puertas para poder adoptar o recurrir a vientres de alquiler.
En este sentido, MFM sostiene que ciertos estudios sugieren que los hijos criados por parejas del mismo sexo desarrollan más problemas que los que tienen “un padre y una madre”.
La República de Irlanda ratificó en julio de 2010 la ley de Relaciones Civiles que, por primera vez en este país, concedía reconocimiento legal a las parejas de hecho del mismo sexo, pero eludía calificar a esas uniones de “matrimonio”.
Dado que Irlanda no permite aún los matrimonios entre homosexuales, esa legislación se redactó con el objetivo de reconocer ciertos derechos a las parejas de gais y lesbianas, pero el objetivo ahora es que estas uniones estén amparadas por la Constitución nacional, para lo cual es necesario convocar un referéndum.
