Descubren proceso biológico para mejorar respuesta inmunológica al cáncer
LONDRES. Científicos en Estados Unidos han identificado un nuevo proceso biológico capaz de mejorar la resistencia al cáncer de nuestro sistema inmunológico, según un estudio que publica la revista Nature.
La investigación, desarrollada por la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Stanford (California), reveló la existencia de una “segunda ruta biológica” que evita que las células inmunológicas devoren y destruyan a las cancerosas.
Para ilustrar esta cualidad, los expertos hablan de una señal que despliegan las células cancerosas para decir a las inmunológicas “no me comas”, lo que permite la propagación de la enfermedad.
Los científicos de Stanford constaron que al combinar el anticuerpo “CD47” con otro similar se puede bloquear el funcionamiento de esa nueva “ruta biológica” y reforzar la capacidad del sistema inmunológico para erradicar muchos tipos de cáncer.
Sus experimentos en modelos animales han arrojado resultados prometedores y su validez como tratamiento contra esta enfermedad está ahora siendo probada en ensayos clínicos, destacan los expertos.
“El desarrollo de las células cancerosas provoca la creación unas moléculas reconocidas por las células depuradoras, llamadas macrófagos (literalmente ‘comedoras grandes’)”, explica en un comunicado Irving Weissman, uno de los autores del estudio.
No obstante, precisa, los cánceres más agresivos despliegan en su superficie la citada señal de “no me comas” a través del “CD47”.
“Ahora hemos identificado una segunda señal de ‘no me comas’ y a su receptor complementario en los macrófagos. También hemos descubierto que podemos anular esta señal con anticuerpos específicos y restaurar la capacidad de los macrófagos para matar células cancerosas”, indica Weissman.
El bloqueo simultáneo de las dos rutas biológicas en ratones permitió la infiltración de un tumor con una gran variedad de células inmunológicas, lo que, a su vez, generó una división en tumores de menor tamaño.
“Estamos entusiasmados con la posibilidad de desarrollar en humanos una terapia doble o, quizá, triple que combine múltiples bloqueos sobre el crecimiento del cáncer”, aporta Amira Barkal, coautor de esta investigación.
